Question:
Can you tell us a little bit about the conference?
Answer:

I presented at the 18th Annual International Conference on Virginia Woolf. This year’s theme was Woolf Editing / Editing Woolf.

Question:
Can you tell us briefly about the work you are presenting?
Answer:

I presented the findings of a comparative analysis of Jorge Luis Borges’s translation of A Room of One’s Own. Borges is equally as famous as Woolf, and his translation often sells precisely because he is the translator. Problematically, however, Borges edited out elements of the feminism that made A Room of One’s Own so important.

Question:
What advice can you give fellow graduate students about obtaining travel funding?
Answer:

Try as many avenues as possible. Check with the department chair, the Graduate College, and with the conference organizers. Since many organizations only allow you to receive assistance once a year, make sure to identify other possible sources so each time you present you can be sure to be reimbursed.

Question:
What do you anticipate you will professionally gain from presenting at the conference?
Answer:

I made contacts with several scholars who are looking at Woolf’s work in translation and, after hearing my talk, I was personally invited by the editor of a major journal to submit my paper!
