Educational Outreach Committee

The Educational Outreach Committee is subdivided into two distinct areas. One area is dedicated to reaching out to students at The University of Iowa, and one the other is intended to reach local schools (elementary, high, colleges, etc).

This committee will develop and plan the "Graduate Enrichment Series" (formerly G.R.A.D or Brown Bag Lunches) as part of their duties. It's important that GSS help provide resources and informational seminars to graduate students for personal and professional development. Keep posted as this committee develops an excellent seminar series. We will post the events on our Calendar and utilize the GSS Listserv as our primary routes of advertising.

It is also envisioned that this committee will develop programs in which GSS goes out to local schools and organizations to promote learning and scholarship as well as teaching others what The University of Iowa can offer them.

Committee Report: 

For the 09/18/09 meeting:

The Educational Outreach Committee had its first meeting and are currently working on putting together a survey that is to be sent to local high schools and colleges. Through this survey we intend to learn about what high schools and colleges might expect of an outreach program that focuses on getting graduate students and their specific knowledge and experience into classrooms. Also, we are going to have our first lecture events of the semester on Oct. 5: Achieving a Healthy Work-Life Balance with speakers from Family Services, Counseling Services and Student Health.

For the end-of-summer co-chairs' meeting with Dean Gardinier:

We met with Dean Gardinier to report on our activities and to coordinate activities with regard to lectures. Dean Gardinier also heard of our outreach activities and shared some useful contacts. Please look at the meeting report, which can be found below.
