Service Committee

The Service Committee coordinates events of a philanthropic nature for the Graduate Student Senate and the graduate student community as a whole. We have a very active service focus and regularly participate in the following events/offer services to:

  • Light the Night Walk
  • Johnson County Crisis Center
  • Iowa City Animal Shelter
  • Chili Dog Fair
  • Coralville Children's Museum

After you mingle with fellow graduate students at the GSS Social Hour at Joe's Place, come on over to Fired Up! on Thursday, Nov. 5, 6 to 8pm, to paint bowls for the Souperbowl fundraiser!!  Souperbowl is an event organized by the Domestic Violence Intervention Program to raise awareness of domestic abuse.  It was developed in response to the myth that rates of domestic abuse are the highest on the day of the NFL Superbowl.  On the day of the fundraiser, attendees purchase tickets and select bowls where they are treated to as much soup as they desire which is donated by local vendors.  If you're interested in attending,  please contact Nirmalla Barros (nirmalla-barros@uiowa.edu) or Kelly Gierlus (kelly-gierlus@uiowa.edu) .    

We will be discussing next semester's activities at our next & last meeting of the semester so bring your ideas, suggestions, & thoughts!

Updated 10/31/09  

  •  We're looking into displaying our painted bowls at the IMU before the Souperbowl fundraiser in February 2010.
  • We've also reserved the Field House's Main Deck for Saturday, April 10, 2009 12-5pm for our Annual Wiffleball Tournament to benefit the Crisis Center.
