  • Professional Development Series: "Writing Productivity" - Dr. Susan Johnson - Sponsored by the Graduate College (flyer)

The Graduate College is hosting the next presentation in our 2009/2010 Professional Development Series for graduate students and postdoctoral scholars.

Dr. Susan Johnson (Assoc. Provost for Faculty; Professor of Ob-Gyn and Epidemiology) will offer a seminar/workshop entitled "Writing Productivity" on Monday November 2 3:30 - 5:00 pm. The room location will be determined based on enrollment needs.

For students beginning to write their dissertations and/or research papers, this talk may provide valuable insights to get started and to sustain their momentum.

This presentation is open to all graduate students and postdoctoral scholars; however, registration is required so that we can ensure booking a room with enough seats.

Register by Wednesday, October 28th.

We will email back with the confirmation of your registration and provide the room number.

  • New GSS Membership Officer Needed!

Are you interested in becoming a part of the GSS leadership? If so, we have a position for you!

A description of the Membership Officer Position is provided below (as defined in the GSS Constitution):

Membership Officer
The Membership Officer of the GSS is responsible for keeping track of the membership of the GSS and attendance at meetings of the GSS.

a. The Membership Officer shall, under the supervision of the Executive Council, prepare an annual list of departments and interdisciplinary programs eligible for representation in the GSS, and the appropriate number of representatives for each.

b. The Membership Officer is responsible for periodically notifying departments that have vacancies in their representation.

c. The Membership Officer is responsible for notifying members who are not in good standing.

d. The Membership Officer is responsible for maintaining an updated list of members of the GSS.

e. The Membership Officer is responsible for the orientation of new members.

Our current membership officer, Mohamed Habib, will be leaving GSS for Egypt next semester. Mohamed has done a great job keeping the membership records up to date and has been a valuable asset to the organization during his terms in office. He will certainly be missed by his fellow GSSers!

This is an elected position, so please send your name/department to Kristina Rogers by Monday, November 2 (5pm). The election for this position will be held at the next GSS meeting - Tuesday, November 3.


  • Dean's Graduate Student Advisory Committee (DGSAC) Seeks Topics of Concern to Graduate Students in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences (CLAS)

Do you have any questions you would like addressed by Linda Maxson, Dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences? If so, DGSAC is here for you!

This semester's meeting with Dean Maxson is coming up and the DGSAC committee would like to ask you and your constituents if you have any topics that we might bring before the Dean. Please email Ulrike Carlson, DGSAC Chair, with any suggestions by Monday, November 2.


  • Graduate Student Support Group (flyer)

The Graduate Student Support Group meets weekly from 12:00 - 1:00 PM. This group is offered through the University Counseling Services. See attached flyer for more information.


  • Executive Council of Graduate and Professional Students (ECGPS) Tailgate (Iowa vs. Indiana - 11 am) - Saturday, October 31

This Saturday, October 31st, ECGPS will be hosting a tailgate for you! ECGPS (Executive Council of Graduate & Professional Students) is your student government. We are excited to have Sprint sponsoring our tailgate this year. This event is a great chance for you to meet your student body representatives and meet other graduate and professional students at the University of Iowa. There will be food and a chance to win gift certificates to Formosa Asian Cuisine.  Join us in the Dental lot from 7:00 - 11:00 am to cheer on the Hawkeyes as they take on Indiana!

    • Social Committee Meeting - Monday, November 2 (6-7PM) -T-Spoons (Market/Linn)
      • If you've enjoyed the social events, become a part of the committee that makes them happen!
    • FiredUp Bowl Making Event - Thursday, November 5 (6-8 PM) - Fired Up (Downtown IC)
      • Bowls will be donated to the Domestic Violence Intervention Program (DVIP) Souperbowl Event held in February. Please RSVP to Nirmalla Barros if you would like to make a bowl for the Souperbowl! As with any GSS event, be sure to bring your friends!
    • GSS Social Hour - Joe's Place - Thursday, November 5 (5-9 PM) 
      • Grab some food, then if you're a part of the DVIP Bowl Making Event, at 6pm, head over to the FiredUp! After you and your friends have crafted the world's best bowl for a good cause, come back to Joe's and enjoy some time out with friends!
