The Graduate College is hosting the first presentation in our 2009/2010 Professional Development Series for graduate students and postdoctoral scholars.
Diane Crosby and Angela Keysor (Graduate Services, Division of Sponsored Programs) will offer an interactive workshop entitled “External Funding: Been There, Got That”. It will include a roundtable panel discussion with graduate students who have competed successfully for external funding. The event will be on Monday September 21st from 3:30 to 5:00 pm. The room location will be determined based on enrollment needs.
This presentation is open to all graduate students and postdoctoral scholars; however, registration is required so that we can ensure booking a room with enough seats.
It’s never too early to think about a search for funding opportunities that will support your dissertation and research efforts. Even if you already have internal funding, successful competition for external funding will certainly enhance your professional career and provide flexibility for your graduate training. At this workshop you can ask questions, listen to discussions, and gain helpful information from graduate students who have succeeded in securing funding in a variety of fields. Plan to attend this seminar for tools that will help you maximize your ability to gain the funding you need.
Register by Tuesday September 15th. We will email back with the confirmation of your registration and provide the room number (https://forms.grad.uiowa.edu/pds‐registration). We welcome suggestions for future events for this series as we continue to expand our offerings.

3. Professional Advancement Grants Committee (PAGs)
The PAGs (Professional Advancement Grants) committee of ECGPS (Executive Council of Graduate and Professional Students) needs more committee members!
Responsibilities include:
- Attending an orientation meeting to learn how to score grants.
- Scoring grants. Each semester, three separate grants are offered through PAGs: Research, Travel Grants, Professional Development Grants
- Typically the scoring is accomplished via email, and is approximately a 1‐2 hour commitment per grant. For the research grants, the committee will meet to decide funding. Note this committee was formerly the Scholarly Presentation and Research Grants (SPRG) Committee, but was renamed and reformed with the split of the governments; thus, this is an ECGPS committee solely.
Deadlines:
- Research and professional development ‐ October 19th.
- Travel ‐ September 24, November 19, February 18, April 22
