Service Learning and Civic Engagement Links

Campus Compact - a national coalition of nearly 1,200 college and university presidents is committed to fulfilling the civic purposes of higher education. It is the only national higher education association dedicated solely to campus-based civic engagement. The mission of Campus Compact is "[to advance] the public purposes of colleges and universities by deepening their ability to improve community life and to educate students for civic and social responsibility."
Imagining America - focuses in the area of arts, humanities, and design with a desire to strengthen the public role by "supporting publicly-engaged academic work in the cultural disciplines and the structural changes in higher education that such work requires." In order to establish this mission, Imagining America has built ongoing collaborative relationships with public and non-profit partners, including direct support from campus-community cultural partnerships such as colleges & universities, and engaged artists & humanists.
The University of Iowa Center for Teaching - The mission of the Center for Teaching is to "promote and support efforts to enhance instruction at The University of Iowa." In pursuit of this mission, the Center has established four overlapping goals. We strive to: 1) Support and promote the development of teaching skills; 2) Strengthen the culture of teaching; 3) Serve as a symbol of the University's commitment to teaching; and 4) Influence policy discussions in ways that support the development of an excellent teaching and learning environment. The University of Iowa Civic Engagement Program - dedicated to enhancing the relationship between members of the University, including students, faculty, and staff with communities using various strategies. Examples include integrating service learning into an established curriculum, building partnerships with various community organizations, and sponsoring regular volunteer fairs.
The United Way of Johnson County - an independent, non-profit organization that utilizes volunteer community leaders from Johnson County who identify and prioritize health & service needs of the community. Members "raise funds, manage the organization, and provide services such as identifying community needs, providing management assistance to affiliated agencies, and distributing in-kind goods and services."
The Unversity of Iowa Obermann Center for Advanced Studies - The Obermann Center for Advanced Studies invites scholars from across all disciplines and institutions to participate and develop methods of facilitating engaging relationships with an intellectually diverse community. Scholars may work individually or may interact and collaborate with others to examine broad areas of knowledge and look further into complex problems and ideas.
