Graduate Student Recognition Week

Help recognize graduate students and help them raise funds at a Thai Flavors Fundraiser! All you have to do is gather up your friends and family and eat lunch and/or dinner at Thai Flavors. A portion of the sales will go to The Graduate Student Senate. Graduate Student Recognition Week was created by GSS, is advertised by GSS, and is made possible through volunteer service of busy graduate students. Free Radical and Radiation Biology Program staff, faculty, and graduate students are invited to attend a pizza luncheon to honor the achievements of our PhD and MS students.

1st and 2nd year MBA students who wish to talk one-on-one with Jay Sa-Aadu and Colleen Downie about their ideas for improving the program are invited to attend. The luncheon is limited to 10 people, so RSVP now to Colleen Downie.

English Department staff, faculty, and graduate students are invited to attend a "Cake in the Commons" reception honoring our PhD and MS students for their achievements and celebrating the newly decorated Graduate Commons. Refreshments will be served.

In honor of Graduate Student Recognition Week (March 23 - 27) The College of Public Health and Master of Public Health Program want to thank you for your contributions to our community with lunch catered by Chipotle. Intermedia Graduate Open House showcases the work of graduate students engaged in Intermedia creative research and development. This Intermedia signature event features a randge of individual and collaborative projects in a range of experimental, interdisciplinary media including including installation, photography, video, installation, art + ecology and the unexpected.

As part of the Research Open House, we are encouraging undergraduate and graduate students, as well as postdoctoral fellows and research staff members, to prepare and display posters highlighting their research. This is an excellent opportunity to share your research with potential collaborators and employers. Awards will be given to the best student posters in each of the following categories: Biomedical Engineering; Chemical & Biochemical Engineering; Civil & Environmental Engineering; Electrical & Computer Engineering; Industrial Engineering; Mechanical Engineering; Center for Computer-Aided Design; IIHR--Hydroscience & Engineering; Center for Bioinformatics & Computational Biology; Center for Global & Regional Environmental Research; and the Iowa Institute for Biomedical Imaging. Posters will be primarily judged by advisory board members, alumni, and faculty/staff. Students will submit votes for the overall “Popular Choice Award”. We have eliminated the requirement to judge 3 fellow student posters as we have heard this is a major time constraint. All authors contributing a poster will also be eligible for a random drawing of prizes. Judging results and the drawing of prizes will be held during the Student Luncheon, April 17, 2009. You will need to check-in and hang your poster on the afternoon of Wednesday, April 15th. The check-in desk will be located in the 2nd floor lobby area near the John Deere Plaza. The check-in runs from 1:00-6:00 PM on Wednesday; all posters need to be displayed by 9:00 AM on Thursday. You MUST be at your poster during your assigned time and be ready for those who are visiting. Poster submission forms deadline is extended until Wednesday, March 25th.

The Department of Chemistry holds an annual appreciation event for faculty, staff, and graduate students. Most years, the event is during Graduate Student Recognition Week, however this year the event is a month shifted. Chemistry is very creative with this event. Last year, we had some games like matching baby/child pictures to names of department faculty and staff members, and departmental awards such as "Most Likely to Succeed" and "Messiest Lab Assistant Award." They serve a very nice hors d'oevres line, too.

An orientation week is held for new international MBA students at the start of every semester, followed by an “IMPACT” week for all the new MBA students. IMPACT stands for Involvement, Motivation, Professionalism, Achievement, Challenge, and Teamwork. IMPACT is orientation for the MBA program. During the IMPACT week, the students first get information sections from the dean and the guest speakers and then head out for a camp site to build up the team spirit. At the beginning of every semester, MAc program holds a barbeque picnic to bring the accounting faculties, old and new MAc students together. It is a welcome picnic for new MAc students, but also a fantastic chance for them to get in touch with the faculties and older students to know more about the program, learning experience and their possible future careers.
